With<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>a<\/span><span class=\"s1\">n\u00a0<\/span>estimated population of 90,000 to 100,000 people, Manhattan\u2019sChinatown\u00a0is also one of the oldest Chinese ethnic enclaves in New York.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Souven<\/span><span class=\"s1\">ir\u00a0<\/span>shops and exotic restaurants greet visitors when they step out of the Canal Street subway station. It comprises the area south of Broome Street and east of Lafayette Street and makes people feel like they are entering a different continent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>The first Chinese immigrants arrived in New York in small numbers in the 18th century. Not until the mid 19th century did a significant number of Chinese move to the East Coast and settle in New York.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Chinatown has become a place with well-preserved Chinese culture as well as a place with mixed culture. I can taste both Chinese food and Italian food whatever I want.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 That\u2019s so great,\u201d said Mary, a visitor in Chinatown.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>There are many opportunities for tourists to get fully involved in Chinese culture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span>Mahayana Buddhist Temple is a center of Buddhi<\/span><span class=\"s1\">sm in Chinatown and it has the largest statue of Buddha in New York City. The main worshiping area provides tourists a great place to pray for good luck for their friends and family.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u201cWe believe in Buddhism and think he can bring fortune for us. Every Sunday morning we come here and joi<\/span>n in the Buddhist ceremony. We have been doing this for three years, and we are pious followers,\u201d said Wen Yue and her daughter, both residents in Chinatown.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 The Museum of Chinese in America<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>The Museum of Chinese in America (MOCA) at 215 Centre Street was founded in 1980. It is dedicated to preserving and presenting the history, heritage, culture and diverse experi<\/span>ences of people of Chinese descent in the\u00a0United States.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>The Museum of Chinese in America has amassed a nationally-significa<\/span><span class=\"s1\">nt collection of\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">materials documenting Chinese life in America. We work as a workshop and provide educating programs to engage participants in an active learning process. We want to make the history alive, and instill a love for lifelong learning,\u201d said Sam Guo, an educator in MOCA. \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s1\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\">A Glimpse into the Chinese Community<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Columbus Park, formerly known as Mulberry Bend Park, is a public park on 67 Mulberry Street in Chinatown, Manhattan, New York. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>At Columbus Park in Chinatown, visitors can get a glimpse of the diversity of the neighborhood, especially on weekends. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>There are amateur Chinese opera t<\/span>roupes performing in the park, residents playing mahjong and cards, folks practicing tai chi and learning kung fu, and the stray fortune-teller or<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>two.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_80\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-80\" style=\"width: 354px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-80\" src=\"http:\/\/projects.nyujournalism.org\/10amnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2017\/08\/FullSizeRender-21-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"354\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"http:\/\/projects.nyujournalism.org\/10amnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2017\/08\/FullSizeRender-21-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/projects.nyujournalism.org\/10amnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2017\/08\/FullSizeRender-21-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/projects.nyujournalism.org\/10amnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2017\/08\/FullSizeRender-21-768x576.jpg 768w, http:\/\/projects.nyujournalism.org\/10amnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2017\/08\/FullSizeRender-21-1200x900.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 354px) 85vw, 354px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-80\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chinese performers in Columbus Park<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>\u201cEvery weekend I come to the Columbus Park. There are always a lot of things to do here. The facilities are basic, but the atmosphere is just wonderful,\u201d said Zhang, a resident living in Chinatown for two years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Columbus Park is separated into two parts. The north part is for older Chinese people playing musical instruments or card games. It is quite relaxing here and seeing Chinese children and the American children getting along well and playing together is very interesting. I saw the Chinese children taught the American how to play PIng-Pong,\u201d said Bill, a New Yorker.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>There is also a statue honoring Dr. Sun Yatsen, the leader of the 1911 Chinese revolution in the northern part of the park.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">Authentic Chinese Food in Chinatown<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Lots of the so called Chinese food in Chinatown are different from the authentic Chinese food in China. It tastes the same as it does in China because we apply the same method to make the broth,\u201d said Zheng Yan, a waitress in the restaurant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span>Dim Sum Go Go is another Chinese restaurant on 5 East Broadway in Chinatown. I was so happy when\u00a0<\/span>I found the same dishes in Chinatown.
