{"id":133,"date":"2017-08-10T19:12:06","date_gmt":"2017-08-10T19:12:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/projects.nyujournalism.org\/precollegepress\/?p=133"},"modified":"2017-08-10T19:43:46","modified_gmt":"2017-08-10T19:43:46","slug":"east-coast-vs-west-coast-style","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/projects.nyujournalism.org\/precollegepress\/2017\/08\/10\/east-coast-vs-west-coast-style\/","title":{"rendered":"East Coast vs. West Coast: Style"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>By Vicky Zhang<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A visiting student from Seattle felt ashamed of wearing a T-shirt and sweat pants in a restaurant in New York.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was so used to wearing T-shits and sweat pants every day in Seattle, and when I sit in an Italian restaurant in Manhattan, I realized that everyone is wearing stylish tops, cute dresses, and nobody is wearing sneakers,\u201d said Megan Allen, a 17-year-old.<\/p>\n<p>According to a survey about East Coast and West Coast\u2019s style differences, East Coast people often put more effort into outfits than West Coast people.<\/p>\n<p>Randomly selected 20 young women, age 14-19, 10 people from The West Coast and 10 people from East Coast, answered the survey. On the scale of 1-10 with 1 being the least important and 10 being the most important, people from the two coasts gave their rating about what factors they care the most when shop for clothes.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes the style differences can go wrong. When Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook, showed up with Wall Street investors wearing a hoodie, his outfits covered a lot headlines and contrasting Silicon Valley\u2019s culture with the East Coast\u2019s tradition of formality.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-146\" src=\"http:\/\/projects.nyujournalism.org\/precollegepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32\/2017\/08\/Capture1-1024x272.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"675\" height=\"179\" srcset=\"http:\/\/projects.nyujournalism.org\/precollegepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32\/2017\/08\/Capture1-1024x272.png 1024w, http:\/\/projects.nyujournalism.org\/precollegepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32\/2017\/08\/Capture1-300x80.png 300w, http:\/\/projects.nyujournalism.org\/precollegepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32\/2017\/08\/Capture1-768x204.png 768w, http:\/\/projects.nyujournalism.org\/precollegepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32\/2017\/08\/Capture1-1200x318.png 1200w, http:\/\/projects.nyujournalism.org\/precollegepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32\/2017\/08\/Capture1.png 1485w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Among the West Coast young women the survey showed, comfort was most important with a rating of 9.6\/10. On the East Coast, \u201cstyle\u201d was most important also with a 9.6.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mom always tells me that don\u2019t buy the good-looking ones, only buy those that make you comfy,\u201d said Ceria Martin, a high school student from Bellevue, Wash.<\/p>\n<p>On the West Coast, people wear T-shirts and shorts all the time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy dad sometimes goes to work with shorts and sneakers, and I never thought that\u2019s informal,\u201d said Marisa Anunobi, daughter of a Microsoft employee in Seattle.<\/p>\n<p>On the East Coast, New York City in particular, the streets can be a fashion runway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHonestly, I see people on streets who are looking ready for the runway all the time,\u201d said Ahn Euiri, a girl from South Korea who has lived in New York City since middle school.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-157\" src=\"http:\/\/projects.nyujournalism.org\/precollegepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32\/2017\/08\/Capture2-1024x524.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"522\" height=\"267\" srcset=\"http:\/\/projects.nyujournalism.org\/precollegepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32\/2017\/08\/Capture2-1024x524.png 1024w, http:\/\/projects.nyujournalism.org\/precollegepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32\/2017\/08\/Capture2-300x154.png 300w, http:\/\/projects.nyujournalism.org\/precollegepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32\/2017\/08\/Capture2-768x393.png 768w, http:\/\/projects.nyujournalism.org\/precollegepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32\/2017\/08\/Capture2.png 1066w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 522px) 85vw, 522px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>About 33% of the West Coasters were judged negatively on their clothing, and half of the people on The East Coast were judged negatively on their clothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m from Seattle, and somebody made a bad comment on my clothing because I over-dressed for a homecoming dance,\u201d said Rozella Kim, a freshman in high school.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy English teacher told me I dressed too casual for a semi-formal school dinner. I was wearing flats and an off-shoulder top,\u201d New Yorker Molly McConkey said. She also said she was judged once because she wore the same clothing as the day before.<\/p>\n<p>Lisa Sun, who lives in Bellevue, Wash., said she was once judged negatively by her friends because her top was too \u201csexy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wore the same top to New York last summer, and no one ever paid attention to me,\u201d Sun said.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-161\" src=\"http:\/\/projects.nyujournalism.org\/precollegepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32\/2017\/08\/Capture3.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"469\" height=\"271\" srcset=\"http:\/\/projects.nyujournalism.org\/precollegepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32\/2017\/08\/Capture3.png 1008w, http:\/\/projects.nyujournalism.org\/precollegepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32\/2017\/08\/Capture3-300x174.png 300w, http:\/\/projects.nyujournalism.org\/precollegepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32\/2017\/08\/Capture3-768x444.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 469px) 85vw, 469px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There is a big difference in what young women wear. Nine of 10 West Coast people chose \u201cT-shirt\u201d as what they wear the most often, and only half of the East Coast women choose it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have many T-shirts, but I mostly wear them at home. When I go out, I prefer to wear something more stylish and cute because it gives me a feeling of I\u2019m ready for the day,\u201d an 18 years old New Yorker, Melissa Bain, said.<\/p>\n<p>East Coasters usually wear sandals or flats, and six of 10 people from the West Coast said they usually wear sneakers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSneakers are so comfortable! My feet hurt when I wear sandals or flats because the shoe\u2019s bottom is too thin and isn\u2019t supportive,\u201d Los Angeles resident Marica Uyeda said.<\/p>\n<p>Sneakers are definitely good for long-distance walking even running, but some East Coast people think they aren\u2019t stylish enough.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI often wear dresses in the summer time, and sneakers just don\u2019t match with any dresses or cute tops,\u201d Said Faith Chamberlain, a visiting student from New Jersey.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-167\" src=\"http:\/\/projects.nyujournalism.org\/precollegepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32\/2017\/08\/Capture4.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"544\" height=\"343\" srcset=\"http:\/\/projects.nyujournalism.org\/precollegepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32\/2017\/08\/Capture4.png 850w, http:\/\/projects.nyujournalism.org\/precollegepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32\/2017\/08\/Capture4-300x189.png 300w, http:\/\/projects.nyujournalism.org\/precollegepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32\/2017\/08\/Capture4-768x483.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 544px) 85vw, 544px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Eight of 10 West Coasters and nine of ten East Coasters wear makeup.<\/p>\n<p>Two West Coast people said they wear makeup because they don\u2019t feel confident enough being bare faced, and four East Coast people who wear makeup felt the same way.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy friends in elementary school always made fun of my freckles. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I know I shouldn\u2019t be ashamed of my freckles, but I always put on makeup to cover it,\u201d said Keri Cao, a junior in a Boston high school.<\/p>\n<p>Another interviewee from San Francisco, Joana Collins, also has freckles. She is one of the people who doesn\u2019t wear any makeups.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was judged negatively on my freckles for a few times.
