But just how deep do these differences run, and how many stereotypes do people actually believe? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some notions are that Southerners are typically seen as less intelligent, as \u00a0sweeter, or as having thick accents compared with Northerners. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">About half of the cliches about the South are believed, according to an unofficial survey conducted by an NYU journalism student in New York. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt all depends on the area..\u201d said Don S., a New Yorker, \u201cbut some things are just statistical\u2026\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-127 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/projects.nyujournalism.org\/precollegepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32\/2017\/08\/chart-1024x683.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"372\" height=\"248\" srcset=\"http:\/\/projects.nyujournalism.org\/precollegepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32\/2017\/08\/chart-1024x683.png 1024w, http:\/\/projects.nyujournalism.org\/precollegepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32\/2017\/08\/chart-300x200.png 300w, http:\/\/projects.nyujournalism.org\/precollegepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32\/2017\/08\/chart-768x512.png 768w, http:\/\/projects.nyujournalism.org\/precollegepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32\/2017\/08\/chart.png 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 372px) 85vw, 372px\" \/>Don was referring to the stereotype where 100% of the people interviewed agreed that they view the South as very conservative. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cConservatism is seen through the elections,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, 100% of people agreed that Southerners are typically very religious. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This view, along with the 100% of people who agreed the South is more overweight, can be confirmed through collected polls and information. However, some things cannot be seen with just numbers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While only 40% of those surveyed said Southerners had nicer spirits than Northerners, 70% said that Southerners had more manners and practiced more niceties.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBeing raised in the South, we were always taught to say things like \u2018yes ma\u2019am and no ma\u2019am,\u201d said Elizabeth H. from Tennessee. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other hand, Claire Wang, a student from China, said, \u201cI only know about Southern people from TV\u2026 I think when other people learn that someone is from the South, they talk bad about that Southerner.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Attitudes, however, also play a large role in the cultural divide of the American North and South. Eighty percent of people surveyed agreed that Southerners put on a sweet face but then talk bad behind that person\u2019s back, while Northerners are simply more direct.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Luckily for Southerners though, a significant amount of negative stereotypes were not confirmed. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, only 30% of those surveyed said that Southerners were less intelligent than Northerners, and 20% percent of those were Southerners themselves. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some other cultural differences given by Northerners during the interviews included: college football is very important, people are seen as uncultured, and food is always fried. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet, it is not all bad in the South, according to Elizabeth H, \u201cAt least we have sweet tea here.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-122\" src=\"http:\/\/projects.nyujournalism.org\/precollegepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32\/2017\/08\/survey-table-1-1024x739.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"840\" height=\"606\" srcset=\"http:\/\/projects.nyujournalism.org\/precollegepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32\/2017\/08\/survey-table-1-1024x739.png 1024w, http:\/\/projects.nyujournalism.org\/precollegepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32\/2017\/08\/survey-table-1-300x217.png 300w, http:\/\/projects.nyujournalism.org\/precollegepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32\/2017\/08\/survey-table-1-768x554.png 768w, http:\/\/projects.nyujournalism.org\/precollegepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32\/2017\/08\/survey-table-1-1200x866.png 1200w, http:\/\/projects.nyujournalism.org\/precollegepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32\/2017\/08\/survey-table-1.png 1302w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 1362px) 62vw, 840px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Memphis BBQ in the North<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rendezvous, The Commissary, and Central BBQ are all very familiar names if you live in the Memphis area, a place that loves barbeque so much that it hosts the Memphis in May Barbecue Fest each year. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is hard to find a restaurant in a new area that replicates a genuine, home style meal. However, homesick Memphians will be pleased to know that there is one place up North that does just that. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Southern Hospitality is a Southern themed bar and restaurant located in Hell\u2019s Kitchen, on Manhattan\u2019s West side that s<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">erves true Memphis barbecue. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0An almost-cheesy, rustic feel, makes Southern Hospitality the ideal restaurant for a Southern getaway from the bustling streets of the big city.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-125 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/projects.nyujournalism.org\/precollegepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32\/2017\/08\/southern-hospitality.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"410\" height=\"307\" srcset=\"http:\/\/projects.nyujournalism.org\/precollegepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32\/2017\/08\/southern-hospitality.jpg 500w, http:\/\/projects.nyujournalism.org\/precollegepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32\/2017\/08\/southern-hospitality-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 410px) 85vw, 410px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0However, it must be noted that this joint runs on the pricier side, especially if you are a student. Southern Hospitality\u2019s world-famous prime ribs cost $34, while a sandwich costs around $16. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Yet, with Justin Timberlake, its owner, being a Memphian himself, the restaurant offers food that is as close to home as it gets, and it is probably worth the extra bucks. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>While picking at the last of your sweet ribs,<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Memphians, perhaps you can play the game \u201cSix Degrees of Justin Timberlake,\u201d a Memphians\u2019 favorite pastime. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This game consists of connecting your relation to the pop singer through a game similar to that of one for actor Kevin Bacon. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, Mary S\u2019s mom is JT\u2019s mom\u2019s dentist, or Meredith H\u2019s dad is Timberlake\u2019s cousin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Nicole Burdette is a rising senior at Houston High School in Memphis, Tennessee.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Nicole Burdette The cultural divide between the American North and the South lives in popular culture, movies, books, and in TV.
