To get the full experience, people need to eat in one of their restaurants.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 Eating in museum restaurants has become increasingly common as museums have branched out to the culinary arts in recent years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 Despite the higher prices of these restaurants, patrons say that the cost is worth it for the ambiance and highly aesthetic food presentation common in these art museum restaurants.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 Some museums, such as the MoMa and the Neue Galerie, even hire professional chefs and specialized sommeliers, restaurant managers said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 For some museums, the restaurants follow a theme in conversation with the museums themselves, such as the Jewish museum\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Russ and Daughters<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, serving traditional Jewish food and the Neue Galerie\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Caf\u00e9 Sabarsky<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which prides itself on its Austrian cuisine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 \u00a0These museum caf\u00e9s are immensely popular and welcome many customers on a day to day basis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 \u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s really nice to sit down and eat after an entire day of walking in a museum, it\u2019s like a cherry on top,\u201d said Elvira Eykhmans of New York, a patron of Caf\u00e9 Sabarsky.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>MoMA: Caf\u00e9s 1 and 2 Catch Foodies<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 \u00a0Patrons of modern art are attracted to MoMa\u2019s<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Caf\u00e9s 1<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by their black marble wallpapers and the aroma of roasting coffee beans.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 Caf\u00e9 1<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a counter-service coffee and pastry stand that adheres to the same black and white theme. The cup holders of the caf\u00e9 read the Robert Rauschenberg quote, \u201cAn artist is a diplomat, a prophet, a historian, a poet.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 \u00a0Black-colored cube-shaped seating overlooking the MoMa courtyard gives coffee drinkers an area to sit and chat. Unfortunately, there are no tables in this area.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 \u00a0\u201cThis is supposed to be a kind of grab and go thing, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Caf\u00e9 2<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is where you sit down to eat,\u201d said <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Caf\u00e9 1<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> barista, Michael.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 \u00a0Caf\u00e9 2<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a French and Italian restaurant located right next to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Caf\u00e9 1<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, following the same black and white aesthetic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 \u00a0\u201cI think this restaurant really fits the typical modern art fan. Photo courtesy of Lisa Cochran.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3><b>Russ and Daughters Rises in Popularity<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 \u00a0Located in the basement of the Jewish museum on museum mile, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Russ and Daughters<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> serves traditional and kosher Jewish food for all.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 \u00a0Despite the fact that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Russ and Daughters<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is often referenced as the restaurant in the Jewish museum, the restaurant actually originated on 127 Orchard Street, said maitre d\u2019, Shir Brickner.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 \u00a0This lower East Side appetizing store founded when Polish immigrant, Joel Russ, came to Manhattan and began a catering service with the intent of targeting Jewish immigrants, the company\u2019s website says. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 \u00a0Russ later hired his daughters Ida, Anne, and Hattie to work for the company, giving it the name <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Russ and Daughters<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 \u00a0Employee Jon said this was not a feminist statement but merely an act of pragmatism as Russ needed help with his company.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 \u00a0The history of this establishment fits appropriately with the theme of the art museum, both celebrate Jewish culture through artistic means.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 \u00a0Russ and Daughters<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> puts emphasis on its adherence to kosher standards and maintains that it serves \u201ccomfort food,\u201d Brickner said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 \u00a0This restaurant is most popular during the brunch hour while its appetizer counter sees crowds at varying times of day, Brickner said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 \u00a0\u201cMy personal favorites are the knishes and the Chocolate Babka French Toast,\u201d said frequent diner, Shannon Clarke. \u201cThey\u2019re divine.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_69\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-69\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-69\" src=\"http:\/\/projects.nyujournalism.org\/precollegepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32\/2017\/08\/Screen-Shot-2017-08-09-at-9.59.31-PM-300x166.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"166\" srcset=\"http:\/\/projects.nyujournalism.org\/precollegepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32\/2017\/08\/Screen-Shot-2017-08-09-at-9.59.31-PM-300x166.png 300w, http:\/\/projects.nyujournalism.org\/precollegepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32\/2017\/08\/Screen-Shot-2017-08-09-at-9.59.31-PM-768x424.png 768w, http:\/\/projects.nyujournalism.org\/precollegepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32\/2017\/08\/Screen-Shot-2017-08-09-at-9.59.31-PM-1024x565.png 1024w, http:\/\/projects.nyujournalism.org\/precollegepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32\/2017\/08\/Screen-Shot-2017-08-09-at-9.59.31-PM-1200x663.png 1200w, http:\/\/projects.nyujournalism.org\/precollegepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32\/2017\/08\/Screen-Shot-2017-08-09-at-9.59.31-PM.png 1474w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-69\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">a waitress hurries back to the kitchen of Russ and Daughters to give orders to chefs. Photo courtesy of Lisa Cochran.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>Neue Trends in Austrian Food at Caf\u00e9 Sabarsky<\/h3>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 Caf\u00e9 Sabarsky<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an upscale Austrian-themed restaurant appropriately located inside the Neue Gallerie.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 \u00a0The 19th century dark, wooden walls and German paintings located in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Caf\u00e9 Sabarsky<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> contribute to the Germanic atmosphere of the restaurant, along with a selection of Austrian pastries encased in glass.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 \u00a0According to employee, Richard, the most popular menu item is the strudel with Schlagsahne (whipped cream). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 \u00a0While some customers complained about the high prices of this restaurant, most said <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Caf\u00e9 Sabarsky <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was worth the cost.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 \u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s nice to just sit here really, it\u2019s a nice atmosphere and I like how it feels like you\u2019re in Europe,\u201d said Kyle of Brooklyn.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 \u00a0The restaurant\u2019s menu also features an array of Viennese coffees and a lengthy assortment of teas and German wines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 \u00a0Outside the caf\u00e9, a plaque gives a brief biography of Serge Sabarsky, the caf\u00e9\u2019s namesake and a co-founder of the Neue gallery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 \u00a0Sabarsky was an art collector and connoisseur of Gustav Klimt who was born in Vienna and later moved to New York where he fought in WWII for the American army as an infantryman.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 \u00a0Following the war, he became an architect and opened his first gallery on Madison Avenue.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_63\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-63\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-63\" src=\"http:\/\/projects.nyujournalism.org\/precollegepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32\/2017\/08\/Screen-Shot-2017-08-09-at-9.57.36-PM-300x225.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/projects.nyujournalism.org\/precollegepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32\/2017\/08\/Screen-Shot-2017-08-09-at-9.57.36-PM-300x225.png 300w, http:\/\/projects.nyujournalism.org\/precollegepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32\/2017\/08\/Screen-Shot-2017-08-09-at-9.57.36-PM-768x577.png 768w, http:\/\/projects.nyujournalism.org\/precollegepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32\/2017\/08\/Screen-Shot-2017-08-09-at-9.57.36-PM-1024x769.png 1024w, http:\/\/projects.nyujournalism.org\/precollegepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32\/2017\/08\/Screen-Shot-2017-08-09-at-9.57.36-PM-1200x901.png 1200w, http:\/\/projects.nyujournalism.org\/precollegepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32\/2017\/08\/Screen-Shot-2017-08-09-at-9.57.36-PM.png 1316w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-63\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A busy afternoon at Caf\u00e9 Sabarsky.
