A place where music fills the space between its beautiful greenery. The Stranger Project gives the average person the platform to do so. The Stranger Project is a performance project where people come up and simply write what they deem the most inspirational situation or story that they have had in life. Then the artist, Brandon Doman, hangs the pieces of paper up with clothes pins onto a makeshift laundry line for people to come and read.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_129\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-129\" style=\"width: 193px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-129\" src=\"http:\/\/projects.nyujournalism.org\/precollegepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32\/2017\/08\/Untitled-2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"193\" height=\"239\" srcset=\"http:\/\/projects.nyujournalism.org\/precollegepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32\/2017\/08\/Untitled-2.png 245w, http:\/\/projects.nyujournalism.org\/precollegepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32\/2017\/08\/Untitled-2-242x300.png 242w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 193px) 85vw, 193px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-129\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Close up of some of the handwritten letters<br \/>July 26, 2017<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Stranger Project started in 2009, and since then Doman has collected nearly 25,000 anonymous handwritten journal entries. The letters are not only hung up in Washington Square Park for everyone to read, but Doman has collected them together to form a book.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>What\u2019s your story<\/em>?\u201d is a collection of 200 stories from the 25,000 in the Strangers Project. (\u201c<em>What\u2019s your story?\u201d<\/em> on amazon.com or Barnes &amp; Noble.com)<\/p>\n<p>Doman said on his official website (strangersproject.com) that he, \u201chas always been curious about the people with whom we share our world,\u201d and that was simply his inspiration for starting the project. It all started when he \u201csat at a local coffeehouse and decided to ask a passerby a simple question: \u2018What\u2019s your story?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_134\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-134\" style=\"width: 283px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-134\" src=\"http:\/\/projects.nyujournalism.org\/precollegepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32\/2017\/08\/Untitled-3.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"283\" height=\"258\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-134\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Letters hanging in Washington Square Park<br \/>July 26, 2017<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>However even though the project was born in New York, it travels all across the country with different festivals and events, showcasing its message. The project has gone from Las Vegas to Venice, Calif., but resides mostly in Washington Square Park.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese stories help us explore our universal truths, desires, and experiences and illustrate the emotional power of storytelling and our shared humanity,\u201d Doman said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Love Letter to the World<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While strolling throughout Washington Square Park, you might stumble upon a small table draped with a blue cloth made to look like clouds, with a giant red heart on the back of a chair and an even larger piece of paper filled with love letters. This newly founded project\u2019s concept is that people passing by can come and write what they appreciate about the world and all it has given us on one giant, ongoing piece of paper.<\/p>\n<p>The artist also travels all around the world with it, trying to get different perspectives from people in different places.<\/p>\n<p>French singer and performance artist, Cocovan, is the creator of this project. Cocovan\u2019s goal is to create the largest love letter in the world, to the world, by the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA Love Letter to the World\u201d originated in Paris, France, Cocovan\u2019s hometown, and the project started in late May of this year.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_137\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-137\" style=\"width: 178px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-137\" src=\"http:\/\/projects.nyujournalism.org\/precollegepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32\/2017\/08\/Untitled-6.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"178\" height=\"237\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-137\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Writing a Love Letter to the World<br \/>July 26, 2017<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Although a new project, Cocovan has already made great progress. After only one month into the project, she had collected nearly 300 letters in 10 different languages, before making the trip over to Manhattan to continue it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just want people to simply write about what they love about the world,\u201d Cocovan said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt truly is amazing seeing how other people view our world, and maybe it can help others appreciate what they didn\u2019t see was already there,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Cocovan is now trying to figure out a way where people can send in their love letters and participate in the project from great distances. Whether they\u2019re rushing for work or enjoying a cup of coffee on a bench, people tend to keep to themselves.<\/p>\n<p>Brooklynite Charlie M. wants to change that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne Free Conversation with a Human Being,\u201d is an independent performance project Charlie M., 19, does in his free time to try and \u201cunderstand people and their struggles more.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_140\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-140\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-140\" src=\"http:\/\/projects.nyujournalism.org\/precollegepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32\/2017\/08\/Untitled-8.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"242\" srcset=\"http:\/\/projects.nyujournalism.org\/precollegepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32\/2017\/08\/Untitled-8.png 367w, http:\/\/projects.nyujournalism.org\/precollegepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32\/2017\/08\/Untitled-8-300x242.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-140\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Charlie giving two girls a poem<br \/>August 8, 2017<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The idea of the project is that anyone passing by in Washington Square Park can sit down with him and have a conversation on absolutely anything they want.<\/p>\n<p>Charlie\u2019s project isn\u2019t very extravagant or fancy. In fact he just sits by the Washington Square Fountain holding a sign that says \u201cOne Free Conversation with a Human Being.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a bit informal you know, but I did it that way purposefully because I wanted to create an approachable atmosphere. I really wanted people to be comfortable when talking to me, as if we were friends,\u201d Charlie said.<\/p>\n<p>Charlie\u2019s main inspiration for starting this project is that he wanted to be a source of help to people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf someone is having a bad day, or going through something, I want them to know that someone does care for them and their problems,\u201d Charlie said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne Free Conversation with a Human Being,\u201d is an ongoing project in Washington Square, and according to Charlie \u201cwill continue for as long as people need someone to talk to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Sarah Gil is a rising junior at Paul J.
