Musicians are spread out in several different locations across the five boroughs. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prohibition of musical\u00a0<\/span><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-76 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/projects.nyujournalism.org\/precollegepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32\/2017\/08\/muny-300x160.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"306\" height=\"153\" \/>performance\u00a0in the New\u00a0York City subway was common since the MTA\u2019s early history. Some musicians still sang and played instruments in an effort to earn money.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Following a court order challenge by musician Roger Manning, in 1985, the ban on subway performance was declared unconstitutional and the MTA created MUNY. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Music Under New York artists is still guaranteed the same rights as\u00a0other street performers in New York. However, association with MUNY provides \u00a0benefits to performers like priority scheduling in popular locations, access to commuter railroad terminals, and fewer problems with law enforcement. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every year, auditions are held in Grand Central Terminal to add new performers to \u00a0MUNY. In an effort to represent people from all cultures, the MTA looks for musicians who reflect the diversity of New York City. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is an online application that musicians submit early in the year and then those who are contacted will be asked to the live auditions in Grand Central.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> They are judged by a panel of professionals from the music industry and each performance is five minutes and is based on \u201cquality, variety, and appropriateness, for the mass transit environment,&#8221; according to the Music of New York website.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Alice Tan Ridley<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Soul singer, Alice Tan Ridley was born in Georgia into a musically talented family of nine siblings, most of whom have become artists. She tends to sing a lot of vocally challenging hits such as, \u201cI Will Always Love You\u201d,\u201d I Will Survive\u201d, \u201cMy Heart Will Go On\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When asked what advice she would give to people trying to pursue music she said, \u201c Never give up even if there is a chance that you will never make it\u2026 never give up\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 64-year-old said that she will never stop performing. In five years she says that she will still be going to the 34th Street station and 42nd Street and Union Square with \u201cher chair and microphone.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yaz Band<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Yasuyuki Takagi was born in Osaka, Japan, and moved to New York in 1992 to pursue his music career. In 2002 his career began to take off. After years of playing\u00a0small jazz clubs, he started his band, Yaz Band.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Takagi said that he didn\u2019t want his \u201clong and difficult\u201d name in the title but still wanted to be represented at the same time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the audition process for Music Under\u00a0<\/span>New York, Yasuyuki said that \u201cit didn\u2019t feel like a competition\u201d but more like \u201ca celebration of musicians\u2019 work\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He said that at first, his parents were\u00a0<\/span>reluctant to \u201caccept his dream\u201d but over time they began to understand that he was dedicated to his music.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yaz Band, a group of three to fo<\/span>ur musicians plays throwback R&amp;B songs from artists such as Stevie Wonder, Earth Wind &amp; Fire, and Marvin Gaye.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-142\" src=\"http:\/\/projects.nyujournalism.org\/precollegepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32\/2017\/08\/IMG_2023-300x246.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"588\" height=\"482\" srcset=\"http:\/\/projects.nyujournalism.org\/precollegepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32\/2017\/08\/IMG_2023-300x246.jpg 300w, http:\/\/projects.nyujournalism.org\/precollegepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32\/2017\/08\/IMG_2023-768x630.jpg 768w, http:\/\/projects.nyujournalism.org\/precollegepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32\/2017\/08\/IMG_2023-1024x839.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/projects.nyujournalism.org\/precollegepress\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32\/2017\/08\/IMG_2023.jpg 1104w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 588px) 85vw, 588px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When asked what his life would be like if he wasn\u2019t a musician, he said he, \u201cwouldn\u2019t be anything\u201d In the future, the musician wants to \u201ctour the world and let people hear\u201d his music. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Justin Tayl0r is a rising senior at Holy Cross High School in Flushing, Queens.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Justin Taylor The Music Under New York (MUNY) program has been around since 1985 fostering over 350 musicians and groups.
